About the African-Australian Leadership Challenge

The African-Australian Leadership Challenge is a transformative leadership development opportunity for emerging leaders from the African-Australian community in Melbourne's West established by Tim Watts MP, the Federal Member for Gellibrand.

As the Federal Member for one of Australia’s most diverse regions, Tim sees how Australia’s multiculturalism strengthens our community, our economy and our nation.

But Australia’s multiculturalism only works because we work at it.

Tim sees the potential of young African-Australians every day and the Leadership Challenge is designed to invest in emerging leaders from this community and connect them to their political representatives, both in their community and in Canberra.

The African-Australian Leadership Challenge 2018

In the 2018 Challenge, two members of the African-Australian community of Melbourne’s West (one male and one female aged 16-24) will join Tim on a 10 day voyage on the Young Endeavour Tall Sail Ship.

The Young Endeavour is a not for profit organisation that operates in partnership with the Australian Government and the Royal Australian Navy to offer participants a once in a lifetime, challenging and inspirational experience at sea. The program aims to increase young Australians ‘self-awareness, develop teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community responsibility amongst members of the youth crew’.

Upon completion of the voyage, Tim will host the young leaders in Canberra to see Parliament and meet with political leaders from all sides of politics.

The Young Endeavour is a symbol of the potential of young Australians that is well known around the country. The completion of a voyage on the Young Endeavour by the Leadership Challenge participants alongside a federal Member of Parliament will send a powerful message about the inclusion of young African-Australians in this symbol of the potential of Australian youth.
