Labor is opposed to any increase or broadening of the GST. Despite their promises at the last election not to raise the GST, it is clear that the Liberals are going to break yet another promise.
The Liberals' plan to expand the GST to include healthcare, education, fresh food and public transport will make everything more expensive; it will push up the cost of living and unfairly target the most vulnerable in our community,
A GST increase will hurt people who can least afford it the most. A household earning $172,638 loses 8.8 per cent of desposable income to GST, while a household earning $26,131 loses 20.1 per cent of disposable income.
Labor believes that any change to the tax system should be fair, and not slog the most vulnerable in our community.
I'm against increasing a tax that would make everything more expensive. I will not support raising the level of the GST or broadening its base.
